There are new Pinewood Derby rules for 2026. All racemasters, parents, and cub scout participipants should be familiar with the rules. All cub scout packs district race events should observe the current rules.
The rules can be found here: NEGA Council 2026 Pinewood Derby Rules
Here are a few changes compared to prior rules
- The awards race classes are grouped as: Lion\Tiger, Wolf\Bear, Webelos\AOL. For each of these race classes, there are trophies for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places for speed and 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places for design\show.
- All cub scout ranks that placed 1st, 2nd, or 3rd for their age rank are eligible to advance to the next race (District Championship or Council Championship, respcetively).
- Design\Show cars must adhere to the same weight and dimension limitations as cars entered for speed.
Please note that these are just a few of the changes. Please refer to the full rules document for details.
If you have any questions about the rules, please reach out to Craig Musser by clicking here.

Sweetwater Packs Without Tracks
For 2026, Cub Scout Pack 499 in Grayson, GA will be hosting the SWPWT event. Thank you to Pack 499 for hosting this year!!
The Sweetwater Packs Without Tracks (SWPWT) event is an opporotunity for cub scouts to participate in a pinewood derby event if their pack is not able to facilitate their own pinewood derby. Please note that this is intended to be a unit\pack level event provided by the Sweetwater District. In order to participate in Packs Without Tracks, the cubmaster, committee chair, or designated leader from the participating pack must register or RSVP with the event chair so that we have a count of the number of participating units and a head count of the participants.
Also, packs must provide their own awards. There will not be any medals, trophies, or certificates provided by the event. Cubmasters: if you would like to present awards to the winners from your pack, please indicate as such in the registration form. The reccomended awards are outlined in the NEGA Council Rules. Reach out to Craig Musser if you have any questions about this.
Any changes in event details will be commuinicated to the designated pack representative at least one week in advance of the event.
Participants agree to observe and abide by the current year's NEGA Council Rules as well as the Scout Oath and Scout Law during the event and while designing and building thier car.
