Merit Badge Webinars 2020

In response to COVID-19, the NEGA Council, B.S.A. will be offering online merit badge classes starting Monday, April 27, 2020 to any scout(s) involved in a Scouts BSA program. We believe that this will help support our youth and their families during the "stay at home" restrrictions.

Each session of each merit badge class will consist of one hour of instruction.  See the registration links below for the dates and times of each merit badge offering.  The scout(s) (and an adult leader or adult family member)  should receive a link to log into the class the Friday evening prior to their first class but no less than 24 hours before the start of the class.

Scouts will use these links for each session to receive live instruction from a merit badge counselor and perhaps guest presenters related to those important topics. Scouts will have various requirements to complete – some of these requirements should be completed before the first class; other requirements will be completed between sessions.

After the final session of each course, the merit badge counselors will communicate with scouts who attended the online course (and with an adult leader or adult family member of the scout) to wrap up any final paperwork and/or requirements to help with the completion of the merit badge.  In some merit badge offerings, only a partial sign off of the merit badge may be possible.

Blue cards will be provided digitally to the scout after the online merit badge course is completed.  The scout’s adult leader or adult family member will be copied on the email.  The merit badge counselor will only provide the digital blue card after the merit badge counselor has verified that the individual scout has completed the listed requirements under that specific merit badge.

Additional Notes (Please Review)

1) Each scout must register separately so we can track their daily progress and attendance. There is a $5 fee to attend each online merit badge course.  The $5 fee will be paid on the Council website.   In addition, for some merit badges, supplies may be required.  Many of these supplies can be purchased at the Council scout store (supplies can be delivered).
2) Current youth protection guidelines (two - deep leadership and no one-on-one contact) will be followed by all merit badge counselors at all times while working with youth and their families.  For more information, see the link below: "Important Excerpts from Advancement Guidelines".   We encourage adult family members to attend (although adult family members will not be able to actively participate in the courses).

4) Scout(s) participating in these online merit badge classes should  receive verbal permission from their parents / guardians and their unit leader(s); more information (below) - "Virtual Merit Badge Guidelines"
5) All live merit badge instruction will be provided using Zoom video conferencing.  You will not be required to download any software to participate; but, you must have a internet enabled device with sufficient bandwidth to effectively participate in video conferencing
6) Lastly, please be aware that not all merit badge requirements will be completed by the end of the last session; some of these merit badges may have outdoor components or other requirements that will not be able to be completed in an online setting or within the time limits provided by the course.

*Scouts may want an adult with them to help.  Please be advised that if you are having technical difficulties, we will not have anyone available to help you accept and start your Zoom invitation.  Please visit Zoom.com to see video tutorials on how to Join a Meeting or click on the link below.

ONLINE MERIT BADGE OFFERINGS (check back often; new courses will be added periodically)
