AWARDS & RECOGNITIONS
Of the many forms of recognition in Scouting, some are presented when others
wish to honor an individual, while others are earned for completing a minimal
set of standards.
Examples of awards intended to honor an individual:
- District Award of Merit
- Silver Beaver
- Lifesaving and Meritorious Action (several levels)
- Scoutmaster of the Year (District)
- Cub Leader of the Year (District)
- Spirit of the Eagle
- Distinguished Eagle Scout
Examples of recognition that is given for completing a minimum set of standards:
- Wood Badge Neckerchief, Beads & Woggle
- BSA Lifeguard
- Totin' Chip
- Snorkeling BSA
- Fifty-Miler
- Historic Trails
- Interpreter Strip
- Mile Swim
- Religious Emblems
A note about adult recognition...
Any Scouter who completes the necessary requirements for a specific award
should not hesitate to submit the proper forms so he/she can be recognized by
their peers; however, a Scouter who is only completing requirements so he/she
can accumulate a chest of embroidered square knots should reconsider their
reasons for becoming a Scout leader.
A paragraph from the 1959 edition of the Boy Scout Handbook is worth remembering. "While Scouters may wear the insignia to which they are entitled, a ‘total display’ may not be in the best taste if the uniform looks over-decorated."
Any questions concerning awards and recognition can be addressed by your District Advancement Chairman.
